Letters From Rito is the true story of Rito Hernandez, a World War II hero who fought for America as a Resident Alien. Rito's story is told through letters he wrote to his sister Josephine over a period of three years.

As the letters unfold, a remarkable story of human character and strength emerges. Rito paints vivid pictures and provides compelling details about pop culture and Army life during the 1940's.

This inspiring story captures the American spirit and reminds us all of the very real contributions and sacrifices that immigrants have made to our country. Rito's letters also follow the timeline of America's involvement in World War II. The play is a very human way of learning about World War II history.

Letters From Rito was written by Rito Hernandez, and has been adapted for the stage by James David Porter with permission from the descendants of Josephine Hernandez Staley.

Rito and Josephine came to the United States from Mexico with their mother Rosa Hernandez in 1921. Rito was two and Josephine was five months old.

At the time the letters begin both are Resident Aliens. Rito is living in Mount Harris, CO working in the coal mines, while Josephine is working as a secretary in Denver.
